How the Family Loan Program of Danbury Helped a Single Mother Regain Stability

At Catholic Charities’ Family Loan Program of Danbury, we believe financial challenges should never stand in the way of a better life. One local mom’s story is a powerful reminder of how personalized support, practical tools, and compassion can transform lives.

This single mother of two young boys had already overcome enormous obstacles. After experiencing homelessness, she secured Section 8 housing and was determined to build a stable life for her children. But without a car, the daily demands of getting to work, taking her boys to school, and managing errands and appointments became a constant struggle.

That’s when she came to Catholic Charities.

She wasn’t just looking for a loan. She was looking for a path forward.

With the help of our Family Loan Program, she applied for a $10,000 low-interest loan to purchase a reliable vehicle. That one decision gave her family immediate freedom and peace of mind.

But the support didn’t end there. Our program manager, Sarah Lynch, worked closely with her to create a customized budget and credit-building plan. Together, they tracked monthly expenses, built strategies for savings, and established long-term financial goals. Through their partnership, she began rebuilding her credit and gaining confidence in her financial future.

When her vehicle was unexpectedly totaled in an accident, the setback could have derailed everything. But thanks to her budgeting skills and improved credit, she was able to apply for a second loan. This time, she did so with even more confidence and financial stability.

She got back on the road. More importantly, she reclaimed her ability to provide for her children and continue building the life she had envisioned.

This is what the Family Loan Program is all about. We help families take meaningful steps forward, no matter where they begin.

If you’d like to help more families like hers, we invite you to support our work. Your generosity fuels second chances and brings lasting stability to our neighbors in need.
