The 2026 Mulcahy Award was presented to Bill Tommins in recognition of his extraordinary leadership, generosity, and unwavering commitment to serving neighbors in need through Catholic Charities of Fairfield County ...and the Thomas Merton Family Center.

Named in honor of the late Joe Mulcahy, whose passion and advocacy helped shape the Thomas Merton Center for decades, this award celebrates individuals who embody the same spirit of compassion, humility, and service.

During the ceremony, Executive Director Mike Donoghue reflected on Bill's years of leadership on the Catholic Charities Board of Directors, his role as Development Committee Chair, his dedication to the Thomas Merton Family Center Advisory Board, and the remarkable impact he and his family have made throughout Fairfield County.

In his heartfelt acceptance remarks, Bill shared how witnessing the work of the Thomas Merton Family Center helped him better understand his own purpose: using his time, talents, and resources to ensure every person is treated with dignity and compassion. He reminded everyone that while the needs in our community continue to grow, so does the compassion of those who choose to serve.

What does it mean to truly welcome someone?

At the 2026 New Covenant Center Summer Soirée, volunteer Bobby Anderson accepted the Founder's Award and shared a heartfelt story that captures the ...mission of New Covenant Center in Stamford, Connecticut.

Each morning begins with a carefully choreographed effort to prepare breakfast for our neighbors, but the work goes far beyond serving food. It's about restoring dignity, building relationships, and making every person feel seen and valued.

One morning, Bobby told a man named Egypt that he was the last guest of the day. His response was simple:

"I'm not a guest. I'm family."

Those words remind us why this work matters.

At New Covenant Center, we know who likes an extra egg, who prefers their cheese on the side, and who needs yogurt for their child. These small acts of care send a powerful message: You matter. You belong.

Every meal served is made possible by dedicated volunteers, compassionate staff, generous donors, and a community that believes no one should face hunger or hardship alone.

As we prepare for our future home, we invite you to join us in building a place where everyone is welcomed with dignity, compassion, and hope.

When renovations are complete, ...this site will be home to the New Covenant Center and the Senior Nutrition Program, both programs of Catholic Charities of Fairfield County. Construction is currently underway, and this celebration brought together community leaders, partners, donors, volunteers, and staff to mark this important milestone.

Speakers include Mike Donoghue, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Fairfield County; Bishop Frank Caggiano of the Diocese of Bridgeport; Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons; and leaders from New Covenant Center, Catholic Charities, and community partner organizations.

The Stamford Family Center will provide hot meals, groceries, senior nutrition services, case management, and wraparound support to families, seniors, and individuals in need—bringing multiple services together in one accessible location.
