New Covenant Center, a program of Catholic Charities of Fairfield County located in Stamford, CT, is in search of a Part-Time Cook (four hours/day; Monday-Friday) for its Afterschool Feeding Program.
The Part-Time Cook is responsible for the daily meal preparation for the children’s afterschool program and emergency shelter feeding programs. Duties includes the preparation of food to be provided while complying with all applicable sanitation, health, and personal hygiene standards and following established food production programs and procedures.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Prepare daily weekday meals for various feeding programs.
- Knowledge of cooking procedures and the ability to prepare food according to food handlers’
guidelines. - Ability to stand for a prolonged period of time
- Ability to produce cooked meals for 100+ guests.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds with a maximum of 50 pounds
- Orientates and supports the kitchen volunteers in food preparation, clean-up, and fosters a pleasant,
team approach atmosphere in the kitchen. - Organize and clean walk-in refrigerator every Friday. Recycle leftover food in accordance to using the
FIFO (F*irst In First O*ut) system. - Ensure that all food stored in refrigerator is securely wrapped with cellophane and aluminum foil to
ensure proper sanitation, freshness and quality. - Certify that all food is dated with the current date and last day of usage.
- Report any food and kitchen related issues to supervisor.
- Monitor sanitation procedures in accordance with the Health Department guidelines.
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Possess or obtain Connecticut Food Safety Certificate within six months of hire.
- Has an interest in working in a soup kitchen environment with a diverse population, with varied needs.
- Must have empathy for the needs of those less fortunate; excellent interpersonal skills, and an ability
to cope with emergencies. - Proven cooking service experience utilizing commercial kitchen equipment, including menu planning
and meal preparation with inventory on hand.
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrate food management skills, ability and experience in a kitchen environment.
- Able to work in a high paced and hot environment.
- Must be able to lift up to 25, and a maximum of, 50 pounds.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Able to multi-task.
- Maintain thorough understanding of menu items and preparation techniques.
- Must be a team player.
