At Catholic Charities of Fairfield County (CCFC), we believe in the power of support and community to change lives. We are proud to share the inspiring success stories of two individuals, Richard Carpenter and Lionel Escalera, whose journeys illustrate the profound impact of our housing programs and case management services.
Richard Carpenter, born and raised in Stamford, CT, has been stably housed in Norwalk for six years. Throughout this time, Richard has received continuous case management from CCFC. His journey has not been easy—he has battled alcohol addiction and endured the challenges of probation. Despite these obstacles, Richard completed a 90-day inpatient treatment program this August, right before undergoing emergency open-heart surgery, during which two of his heart valves were replaced. Supported by his two sisters and CCFC, Richard was able to maintain his housing and recovery, even during these difficult times. His gratitude for the guidance and encouragement provided by Case Manager Nataya McCalla has been a crucial element of his success. As Richard reflects on his journey, he’s especially thankful for the stability his housing has provided and for the ability to enjoy life’s simpler pleasures like watching movies and spending time with loved ones.

Lionel Escalera
Lionel Escalera, from Bridgeport, joined CCFC’s housing program in May 2024 and was recently housed in his first-ever apartment this August. Like Richard, Lionel has faced a long battle with alcohol addiction, but he is committed to maintaining his sobriety. With the support of his family—including his grandmother, aunt, five daughters, and one granddaughter—Lionel is determined to turn his life around. He is proud of his accomplishments and grateful for Nataya’s help in finding a stable home, giving him the foundation to pursue his goal of becoming a Recovery Coach. He has an upcoming interview for this position in October 2024. Lionel believes his perseverance and intelligence are his greatest strengths, and he hopes to serve as an example to his daughters and granddaughter, showing them that hard work and faith make anything possible.
Both Richard and Lionel’s stories highlight how critical stable housing and personalized support are in the journey toward recovery and independence. Catholic Charities of Fairfield County’s housing programs continue to provide individuals with the tools and resources needed to overcome personal struggles and create new opportunities for their future. These stories demonstrate that with the right support, even the most challenging obstacles can be overcome.
