Program Description
Our mission is “to provide a nutritious meal to all those who are hungry. By creating a safe, warm and compassionate environment, we are taking the first steps toward empowering men, women, and children to reach their full potential and regain their dignity and self-respect.”
We are open every day to the public and provide three meals daily to anyone hungry. We also have a food pantry program that distributes bagged groceries to individual and families every Tuesday each month. New Covenant House is the only soup kitchen in the greater Stamford area.
The soup kitchen is an alternative for low income people to enjoy three meals daily at no charge. The food pantry offers alternatives for families unable to eat at the soup kitchen by providing bagged groceries, which is ideal for working families that need a supplement of food to make ends meet each month. In addition, we have an after-school meal program that provides poor and disadvantaged children attending the Yerwood Center after-school program one hot nutritious meal Monday through Friday at 4:00pm .
New Covenant House of Hospitality serves the greater Stamford area, which includes Stamford, New Canaan, Greenwich and Darien. Our guests are the poor and disadvantaged in our community including the homeless; working poor; elderly; mentally ill; HIV/AIDS clients; the disabled and immigrants, both with and without citizenship documentation. Our guests are at risk due to numerous socio-economic factors including poverty; disadvantage; addiction; lack of resources; complicated health issues and/or other disabilities. When living in impoverished conditions, such as homeless shelters, there is also an inherent lack of nutrition and an increase for chronic infection and illness. Ages include birth through approximately 80 years of age. Many guests receive SSI, social security, food stamps, welfare benefits or small retirement checks.

One Client's Story
Debbie R., single mother of four, works fulltime, but earning less than $20,000 annually came into New Covenant House earlier this year asking for assistance. Her dilemma was the family car broke down, and with reduced working hours was deeply concerned with her ability to provide for her children. She did not know how she was going to get her car fixed and pay her monthly bills. Debbie is a proud mother that believes she should be able to care for children; was in a situation where she needed our help. We happily told her we can help.
We offered her an opportunity to save on her grocery bill. Her eyes lit up with joy when we told her we can provide 30 meals for each of her children and herself, totaling 150 meals monthly starting today. She was so surprised by the amount of food given to her, she started crying. She was very grateful for our assistance and was appreciative she offered to volunteer on her days off from work. Since that time she has lived up to her commitment by volunteering. This is a wonderful example of how our services can impact a family.
